Estimating Historically Cleared and Forested Land in Massachusetts, USA, Using Airborne LiDAR and Archival Records

چکیده

In the northeastern United States, widespread deforestation occurred during 17–19th centuries as a result of Euro-American agricultural activity. late 19th and early 20th centuries, much this landscape was reforested region experienced industrialization farmland became abandoned. Many previous studies have addressed these changes, but primary method for estimating amount distribution cleared forested land time period has been using archival records. This study estimates areas historical use features extracted from airborne LiDAR data compares to those century maps census records several towns in Massachusetts, state States. Results expand on adjacent areas, demonstrate that representative identified can be reliably used proxy estimate spatial extents area Massachusetts elsewhere also limitations methodology which mitigated through an understanding surficial geology well sources error materials.

Estimating High-resolution Directional Clutter Maps in Forested Terrain Using Airborne Lidar Data

A priori knowledge of clutter environments is critical for understanding target detection performance from airborne sensors and optimally predicting future performance to aid in mission planning. Modern airborne lidar, also known as Airborne Laser Swath Mapping (ALSM), systems can acquire decimeter scale measurements of the 3D structure in forests and urban areas. From these measurements, high ...

Estimating biomass of individual pine trees using airborne lidar

Airborne lidar (Light Detection And Ranging) is a proven technology that can be used to accurately assess aboveground forest biomass and bio-energy feedstocks. The overall goal of this study was to develop a method for assessing aboveground biomass and component biomass for individual trees using airborne lidar data in forest settings typical for loblolly pine stands (Pinus taeda L.) in the sou...

Modeling land-use change in the Ipswich watershed, Massachusetts, USA

The Ipswich watershed in northeastern Massachusetts, USA, is experiencing important land-use changes, which are contributing to severe environmental problems such as eutrophication, ground water depletion and loss of wildlife. The objective of this paper is to model deforestation between 1971, 1985 and 1991 in the watershed of the Ipswich River in Massachusetts, USA, where most of the forest lo...

Airborne mapping using LIDAR

Mapping is a central and common task in robotics research. Building an accurate map without human assistance provides several applications such as space missions, search and rescue, surveillance and can be used in dangerous areas. One application for robotic mapping is to measure changes in terrain volume. In Sweden there are over a hundred landfills that are regulated by laws that says that th...

Validation of Airborne Lidar Intensity Values from a Forested Landscape Using Hymap Data: Preliminary Analyses

There is a growing body of literature that points to the value of using the intensity measures of the backscattered laser light in addition to the pulse range measurements for studying a range of environments, including forests. However, there is a lack of literature that has validated the lidar intensity values captured in a campaign, and therefore limited understanding in the full utility of ...
